What is WiMAX?
WiMAX is an IP based, wireless broadband access technology providing performance similar to 802.11/Wi-Fi networks with the coverage and QOS (quality of service) of cellular networks while offering a larger service area deployment. WiMAX is the acronym for "Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX)”. At its heart WiMAX is the backbone for the fixed broadband wireless technology.
What Spectrum does WiMAX operate in?
CitiLink operates on the 3.65 GHz Licensed Microwave band.
Licensed usage of this frequency is required by the FCC. CitiLink Broadband Solutions is licensed throughout the US. Benefits include cleaner frequency, less interference, Quality of Service (QOS) which allows for VoIP and IPTV applications.
How farwill the signal travel?
WiMAX has a broadcast range of up to 11 miles. However in metropolitan areas the network is deployed at a much closer proximity to provide the quality of service required.
What is non line of sight (NLOS)? Does WiMAX possess NLOS
capability?
WiMAX does possess NLOS capabilities, although how much and to what extent will vary depending on the spectrum bands being used. Non line of sight indicates that the signal from a radio is received by either passing through impeding objects, such as tree tops, walls or even in some cases buildings or if the signal is received as a reflection from another building, body of water or land feature. In both cases the broadcasting radio can be completely or at least partially obscured by an obstruction.
Is WiMAX a replacement for DSL or Cable?
It is important to remember that WiMAX is a global broadband wireless standard. The question of whether or not it could replace either DSL or Cable will vary from region to region.
WiMAX is Safe?
There is a historical body of evidence supporting the safety of technologies used in upcoming WiMAX and WiMAX products.
Microwave and other spectrum technologies enjoy over a hundred years of historical evidence of safety when prudently handled and configured.
WiMAX is Reliable?
WiMAX service providers have no wires or cables that can be cut and can offer 99.99% of reliability by using redundant radios to cover a given market. Use of licensed spectrum ensures that only one service provider is broadcasting on a given frequency. Finally, radios with high quality chips have a mean time between failures (MTBF) of 40 or more years. Note: a backhoe operator cannot cut a WiMAX wireless connection.
Does WiMAX have quality of service (QOS) capability?
Yes. WiMAX radios already support very robust QOS capabilities up to and incorporating asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) quality. The system is configured to handle IP traffic, Ethernet and ATM natively. The WiMAX was designed support future transport protocols not yet invented. Links can be dynamically configured. Basically, this dynamic configuration technique enhances the balancing act between raw capacity and quality on the fly. It improves capacity or spectral efficiency a great deal. The whole issue of QOS is becoming even more important as device capability has revealed an apparent pent-up desire to use more rich media content such as video.
Does Weather affect WiMAX Signal?
If properly deployed, diverse weather conditions (snow, fog, rain) do not affect the performance of WiMAX technology.
WiMax Applications:
• WiMAX has widespread support throughout the industry, as it allows highly innovative applications to emerge from anywhere in the world.
• Applications such as voice, video streaming and online applications work significantly better, and WiMAX provides an effective platform for broadcast, on-demand and interactive video applications.
